Repair, rebuild, restore
What is restorative dentistry?
Restorative dentistry is the branch of dental care focused on repairing and rebuilding teeth that have been damaged by decay, injury, or wear. At Berthoud Family Dentistry, restorative care means more than just fixing what's broken. It means understanding why it happened, addressing the underlying issue, and giving you a result that looks natural, feels comfortable, and lasts. Dr. Sean brings a level of surgical precision and clinical training that's uncommon in a general practice setting, which means complex restorative cases that other offices might refer out are handled right here in Berthoud.

Why it matters
The benefits of restorative dentistry
Damaged or missing teeth affect more than just your appearance. They impact how you chew, how you speak, and the long-term health of your surrounding teeth and jaw. Restorative dentistry addresses all of it, giving you back full function and confidence at the same time.

Restore full function
A damaged or missing tooth puts extra strain on the rest of your mouth, often leading to shifting, bite problems, and additional wear over time. Restorative treatment brings everything back into balance so your whole mouth can work the way it's supposed to.
Protect your healthy teeth
Untreated decay and damage don't stay contained. They spread to neighboring teeth, compromise the surrounding bone, and turn manageable problems into much bigger ones. Addressing issues early with the right restorative treatment protects what you already have.
Look and feel like yourself again
Modern restorative dentistry produces results that look completely natural. Whether it's a tooth-colored filling, a porcelain crown, or a full set of implant restorations, the goal is always a result you feel good about every time you smile.
Our restorative treatments
Dental fillings
When decay reaches the inside of a tooth, a filling is the most common and most effective way to stop it in its tracks and restore the tooth to full function. At Berthoud Family Dentistry, we place composite fillings, which are tooth-colored and designed to blend seamlessly with your natural enamel. We'll remove the decayed tissue, clean the area thoroughly, and place the filling in a single appointment. The result is a tooth that looks, feels, and functions just like it did before, without the dark metal appearance of older amalgam materials. We do not place amalgam fillings.
Root canal therapy
Root canal therapy has a reputation it doesn't deserve. For most patients, the procedure is no more uncomfortable than getting a filling, and it's the most effective way to save a tooth that would otherwise need to be extracted. We perform both anterior and posterior root canals right here in our office, which means you won't need a referral to an endodontist for most cases. We remove the infected or inflamed tissue from inside the tooth, clean and shape the root canals, and seal everything to prevent reinfection. Once the root canal is complete, the tooth is typically restored with a crown to protect it long term.
Dental crowns
A crown is a custom-made cap that fits over a damaged, weakened, or heavily restored tooth to protect it and restore its full function and appearance. We place lab-made crowns crafted from high-quality materials designed to match the color and shape of your natural teeth. Crowns are commonly placed following root canal therapy, to protect a cracked tooth, or to restore a tooth that's been broken down by decay to the point where a filling alone isn't enough. The process typically takes two appointments, one to prepare the tooth and take impressions, and a second to place and adjust the final crown.
Dental bridges
A dental bridge is a fixed restoration used to replace one or more missing teeth by anchoring an artificial tooth to the healthy teeth on either side of the gap. Bridges restore your ability to chew and speak comfortably, prevent the surrounding teeth from shifting out of place, and give you a natural-looking result that's permanently in place. We'll evaluate whether a bridge is the right solution for your situation and walk you through exactly what the process involves, including how the supporting teeth are prepared and what to expect at each appointment.
Dentures
For patients who have lost multiple teeth or are facing full arch tooth loss, dentures remain one of the most accessible and effective ways to restore function and confidence. We offer both partial dentures, which replace several missing teeth while preserving the ones that remain, and full dentures for patients who need a complete upper or lower arch replaced. We take time to make sure your dentures are fitted and adjusted properly so they're as comfortable and functional as possible. If you've had dentures in the past that never felt quite right, we'd love the chance to do better.
Dental implant restorations
Dental implants are the closest thing dentistry has to a natural tooth, and when the implant itself has been placed and integrated, we handle the restoration right here in our office. That means the crown, bridge, or implant-supported denture that attaches to your implant is designed, fabricated, and placed by the same team who will be caring for you long term. For patients pursuing full arch solutions, we work closely with a trusted surgical partner to coordinate the placement and ensure the final restoration is planned and executed to the highest standard. We'll make sure the entire process is clear, coordinated, and as straightforward as possible from start to finish.
The restorative dentistry process
A thorough evaluation
Every restorative case starts with a comprehensive exam. We'll review your X-rays and 3D imaging, assess the extent of the damage or decay, and take time to understand your goals before recommending anything. You'll always know what we found, what your options are, and what we recommend and why, before any treatment begins.
A personalized treatment plan
Once we have a complete picture of what's needed, we'll put together a treatment plan tailored to your situation, your timeline, and your budget. If multiple steps are involved, we'll walk you through the full sequence so there are no surprises. Our team will also go over the financial side of things, including what your insurance covers and whether our membership plan applies, before you commit to anything.
Treatment & next steps
Most restorative procedures are completed right here in our office, without a referral. Once your treatment is complete, we'll give you any aftercare instructions you need and schedule follow-up visits as appropriate to make sure everything is healing and functioning the way it should.

Frequently Asked Questions
Still Have Questions?
We're happy to talk through your options before you commit to anything. Give us a call and we'll point you in the right direction.
Some signs are obvious, like a broken tooth, a lost filling, or a persistent toothache. Others are less noticeable, which is why regular exams are so important. We'll identify any areas of concern during your checkup and let you know exactly what we recommend and why. If something comes up between visits, like sensitivity, pain, or a visible crack, don't wait. Call us and we'll get you in as soon as we can.
Yes. We use tooth-colored composite resin for fillings and high-quality porcelain or ceramic materials for crowns and bridges, all selected to match the color, shape, and translucency of your natural teeth. The goal is always a result that looks like it belongs there, not like dental work.
It depends on the type of restoration and how well it's maintained. Composite fillings typically last seven to ten years with proper care. Crowns and bridges can last ten to fifteen years or longer. Implant restorations can last many years and sometimes decades with good oral hygiene and regular maintenance visits. We'll give you realistic expectations for your specific restoration and the at-home care routine that gives it the best chance of lasting.
